4-H Public Speaking

Public speaking and presentation skills are part of the 4-H program. Many 4-H clubs encourage their members to give a presentation at their club meetings. 4-H leaders receive a publication on presentations when they start their clubs. Every year older 4-H youth teach presentation skills at a workshop, which is held in January. 4-H members, parents and leaders are invited to attend.

A county Presentations Contest is held in February for any youth enrolled in the Benton County 4-H program. A judge gives feedback to the youth, as well as a ribbon. The top 7th-12th graders are selected to give their presentation at State Fair. Each winter youth in grades 9-12 can participate in the Junior Toastmasters Public Speaking program. For eight Monday evenings, youth learn speaking skills, gestures, voice tone, how to run a meeting effectively, and even how to give on-the-spot presentations.

OSU Professor Tom Plant support the youth participants in a fun, safe atmosphere. 4-H members can sign up for this by calling the Extension office in the fall and early January for the upcoming program.

The Jr. Toastmaster program for 2006 is now full, if you would like to be put on a waiting list please call the office. If you have questions or would like to register, please call the Benton County Extension office.
