Basic Forestry Shortcourse: If you have a parcel of forestland, or are intending to buy one someday, then this course is for you. Designed by OSU’s Extension Forestry team, this six-session course covers what you need to know, and who you might want to contact to begin managing your forest. Sessions will be held at the Linn County-OSU Extension Office, 4 th and Lyons Streets, Albany; except a Saturday field trip, which will be on local forest properties. Topics to be covered include:
- Thursday, January 24, 6:30-9:00pm Introduction, How Your Forest Ecosystem Works; Sustaining your forest- protection from pests, and fire.
- Thursday, January 31, 6:30-9:00pm Measuring trees and other resources in your forest; Reforestation-establishing and maintaining forest plantings.
- Thursday, February 7. 6:30-8:30pm The science and art of silviculture- thinning, pruning, fertilizing; A place for fish and wildlife on your woodlands.
- Tuesday, February 19, 6:30-9:00pm Taxes and other business necessities; Ties to the Land- creating a plan and a future for your forest.
- Saturday, February 23, 9:00am-5pm: Field trip to local forest properties- plant trees, measure growth, view logging, assess roads, discuss fish and wildlife habitat, other topics as desired.
- Tuesday, February 26, 6:30-9:00pm Harvesting and marketing products from your forest; Forest Laws and Incentive Programs- ODF Stewardship Forester, Russ Anderson.
Primary instructor for this course will be Rick Fletcher, OSU Extension Forester for Linn and Benton Counties. To attend you must pre-register no later than Friday, January 18 th, by calling the Benton County Extension Office at 766-6750 or completing and mailing the form. Fee for the course and materials is $35 per person or $50 per couple. If you provide a legal description of your property, we will prepare a site packet of maps and photos for your property for use in discussing management options. Women Owning Woodlands Network
Tool Sharpening Class: A mini-session on tool sharpening will be conducted Saturday, January 26, 10 am – 12 noon by local expert Daryl Richardson. This event will be held at the OSU Forestry Club Cabin and precedes the Benton County Small Woodland Association Annual Meeting. Daryl will demonstrate how to sharpen axes, pruners and more. The event is focused toward women, but men are welcome participate, as well. Bring a dull tool and your favorite sharpening implement, if you have one. Tree Seedling Sale: The annual Linn County Small Woodland Association Tree Seedling Sale is to be Saturday, February 16 from 8 am – 1 pm or until supplies last. It will be held at the Linn County Fair and Expo Center, 3700 Knox Butte Road, Albany. Seedlings vary in price from $1.00 - 5.00 each. The following conifers have been ordered: Douglas-fir, ponderosa pine, incense-cedar, western redcedar, noble fir, grand fir, western hemlock, coast redwood, and giant sequoia. Hardwoods include: Chinese pistache, Eastern redbud, Japanese snowbell, Kousa dogwood, Oregon ash, Pacific madrone, pagoda dogwood, purple smoketree, red alder, strawberry tree and tulip tree. Woodland Information Night This annual event is being held Tuesday, February 26, 7:00 – 9:00 pm at the Corvallis-Benton County Public Library, 645 NW Monroe Ave, Corvallis. Topics this year include the latest on GIS and your forestland, Oregon Small Woodlands Association’s attempt to secure affordable fire liability insurance and the local log market outlook.
