- Do you want to learn more about plants, growing things, and gardening?
- Are you eager to participate in a practical and intensive training program?
- Do you look forward to sharing your knowledge with people in your area?
- Do you have time to attend training and to complete volunteer work?
If you answered yes to these questions,
check out the Oregon Master Gardener program! The Master Gardener Program is an Oregon State University Extension Service program that helps Oregon gardeners learn more about the art and science of growing and caring for plants. It also enables these trained volunteers to extend garden information to their communities through educational outreach programs. Currently, more than 30 Oregon counties have active Master Gardener programs.
What do Master Gardeners do?
As a Master Gardener volunteer, you will work with your local OSU Extension agent to maximize your volunteer time. What you do will vary according to Extension needs and your desires and availability. Examples of Master Gardener activities include:
- Answering gardening questions via telephone
- Staffing plant clinics within the community
- Working on community beautification projects
- Working with local schools to enhance horticulture education
- Speaking to local groups about home gardening
- And much more...
What will I learn?
After you have been accepted into the Master Gardener program, you will attend a series of weekly, full-day classes. The program offers a basic, practical course in plant science and horticulture. Classes include:
- Cultural methods of growing gardens, lawns, fruit trees, and landscape plants
- Pest identification and control methods
- Sustainable gardening practices
- Soil management and plant nutrition
- Diagnosis of plant problems
All of these topics are covered in the OSU Extension Service publication Sustainable Gardening: The Oregon-Washington Master Gardener Handbook, EM 8742, which will be available in the training program as a reference and study guide.
How do I enroll?
