Coos County, with a population
of 63,739 (2004) is located on the coast of southwestern Oregon with the
Pacific Ocean forming its western boundary and the summit of the coast
range its eastern boundary. The county was created by the territorial
legislature from parts of Umpqua and Jackson counties and included Curry
County until 1855.
Coos County encompasses 1,629
square miles (1,034,040 acres) with about two-thirds of the county privately
owned and one-third publicly owned. Principal industries of the county
are timber and wood products, agriculture, fisheries, recreation and health care.
Coos County Extension Service
is your link to Oregon State University. We provide research-based information
in the areas of agriculture (horticulture, livestock, dairy, forages, weed control), forestry, 4-H youth, family and
community development, and marine science.
OSU Extension has been serving
Coos County since 1913. Our office helps county residents through meetings,
workshops, short courses, tours, demonstrations, newsletters and one-on-one
appointments.
Over 200 volunteers help provide
non-formal education to help Coos county residents solve problems, develop
leadership, and manage resources wisely. This group of volunteers made
15,976 contacts during the year 2002.
From
January to December 2002, 17,021 newsletters were sent out in addition
to 83 press releases, 15 radio programs and one television program. 10,558
personal contacts were made with individuals of Coos County by our seven
Extension agents.
