Forestry Programs
The economy of Coos and Curry counties depends on its natural resources. They are particularly dependent on their forest. The role of private non-industrial forest landowners, and the management and stewardship of their lands has become increasingly important to the local economy. Education plays a key role in maintaining a strong and healthy natural resource base. Some of the educational programs include: Basic Forestry Short CourseAn informal workshop designed to introduce woodland owners who know little about forestry to the basics of tree biology, mapping and measurements, reforestation, marketing, and protection of fish and wildlife and other resources. The course will be offered over two Saturday sessions. Harvest Tax WorkshopOregon's harvest tax system will change during the year 2000. This workshop will be designed to help woodland owners who are planning to harvest and sell timber to better understand these changes. The workshop is set for Wednesday March 15, 2000 at the Coquille Extension office. Watershed Stewardship WorkshopA curriculum designed for watershed associations and councils as well as landowners that desire to work toward restoration and enhancement of riparian areas and salmon habitat. Back Yard ForestryAs urban pressures increase many people acquire homes in the forest environment. Often they own only a few acres yet still wish to do things on their property to enhance their property. This program will provide tools and knowledge for land/home owners to better understand tree identification, fire protection, wildlife stewardship, woodland health, and forest regulations. South Coast Forestry NewsTimes and locations of these forestry programs will be announced during the year. They are still in the development stage. South Coast Forestry News, a quarterly newsletter will provide this information along with timely and useful forestry articles. Call 541/396-3121 ext. 240 to be added to the Forestry Mailing List. |
