2013 Starker Lecture Series, Forest Biomas:  Energy and Beyond

The 2013 Starker Lecture Series will present four lectures and a capstone field trip on the theme of Forest Biomass: Energy and Beyond, spotlighting innovations “From the Ground Up.” Please save the following dates:

February 28 / Lecture 1: “Sustainable Integrated Forest Biorefineries.” Shri Ramaswamy, Professor, Bioproducts and Biosystems Engineering, University of Minnesota. .

April 11 / Lecture 2: “Wood to Wing: Envisioning an Aviation Biofuels Industry Based on Forest Residuals in the Pacific Northwest.” Michael Wolcott, Regents Professor and Director, Institute for Sustainable Design, Civil & Environmental Engineering, Washington State University. .

May 2 / Panel on Environmental Considerations:

1) “Forest Bioenergy and Biodiversity: A Preliminary Research Agenda.” Matthew Betts, Associate Professor, Forest Ecosystems and Society, Oregon State University.

2) “Nutrition Limitations on Sustainability of Coastal Pacific Northwest Forests for Bioenergy Production.” Robert Harrison, Professor, Stand Management Cooperative, School of Environmental & Forest Sciences, College of the Environment, University of Washington.

3) “Life Cycle Analysis of Bioenergy Production from Woody Feedstocks – A Comparison Across Alternative Options.” Elaine Oneil, Research Scientist, School of Environmental & Forest Sciences; Executive Director, Consortium for Research on Renewable Industrial Materials (CORRIM), University of Washington.

May 16 / Lecture 4: “Oregon’s Biomass Experience: An Integrated Approach to Forest Biomass.” Matt Krumenauer, Senior Policy Analyst, Oregon Department of Energy.

May 30 / Capstone Field Trip: “A Tour of Forest Biomass – From the Ground Up!” Visit forest biomass production sites and energy facilities in the Benton and Lane County areas; discuss on-the-ground and facility supply and processing considerations, including the technical, environment and economic. NOTE: Registration for the field trip is open until May 17, or until all available seats are filled.  

All lectures will be held in 107 Richardson Hall from 3:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., with a reception following the event. The May 30 field trip will leave at 9:00 a.m. and return at 4:00 p.m.

All events are free and open to the public, with SAF Continuing Education Credits available.

The Starker Lecture Series is sponsored by the Starker Family in honor of T.J. and Bruce Starker and is supported by the Oregon Forest Resources Institute and the OSU College of Forestry.
