2012 Master Food Preserver Volunteer Training.
Applications are currently being accepted for the annual Master Food Preserver Volunteer training that begins March 26, 2012.
The Master Food Preserver program started in 1980 with a dedicated group of volunteers from Linn, Benton, Lane, and Marion counties. These volunteers were trained and certified to assist the County Extension staff in providing up-to-date food safety/preservation information to the citizens in their county. The program has been active in Douglas County since 1997.
The MFPs work as "local food safety/preservation resources" in the community. They conduct workshops and demonstrations for groups and organizations, test pressure canner gauges at workshops and in outlying communities, and play a major role in staffing an annual Food Safety/Preservation Hotline. They staff information booths and present demonstrations at the Douglas County Fair, local festivals, produce stands, farmers markets, home shows, and Saturday Markets, and assist Extension staff with distribution, filing and inventory of food safety/preservation supplies and bulletins. MFP volunteers also have the opportunity to become Food Pantry Volunteers with the Nutritional Education Program (serving low-income audiences.)
Class schedule: Mondays, 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Class meets for 8 weeks.
Location: Pine Grove Community Church, 1729 Buckhorn Rd, Roseburg Oregon 97470.
Cost: TBA (Additional program commitment includes 60 hours of volunteer time during the first year)
