Seed starting workshop

Join the Douglas County Women's Farmer Network for a fun morning of skill building. This hands-on workshop will cover seed starting, soil advice, special conditions for special seeds, types of containers, timing, techniques and care of seedlings.

Bruce began starting seeds for his own garden 40+ years ago and expanded to commercial growing with Joanne in 1995. 

There will be plenty of time for Q&A and you can network with other participants over lunch.

Business workshop – certifications and legalities of running a farm business.

Are you starting a new farm or turning your hobby farm into a small business? This workshop will cover the basics of starting a business including how to register your business name and the different options for business structure. We will also discuss licensing requirements and different certification options like Certified Organic, Animal Welfare Approved, Salmon Safe, and Certified Naturally Grown. Presenters are Doug Monie, an advisor with the Small Business Development Center and Sara Runkel with OSU Extension Service.

Tour of Medford Growers and Crafters Market and Fry Family Farm Store and Food Hub

Join the Douglas County Women’s Farmers Network for a road trip to the Rogue Valley to see how other producers market their products. We will meet at the OSU Extension Office in Roseburg at 9 am and carpool to the Medford Growers and Crafters Thursday Market. The Rogue Valley Growers and Crafters Market is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. After touring the market and eating lunch (you can bring your own or purchasing something from one of the prepared food vendors) we will travel to the Fry Family Farm store and food hub. The Fry family has been farming in the Rogue Valley since 1990. They currently farm 90 acres of certified organic vegetables, fruit, and flowers. The farm store opened in 2016 and offers a variety of products from producers in the Rogue Valley. They also have a packing facility and commercial kitchen. Amber Fry will give us a tour of the store and food hub. We will return to Roseburg by 4 pm. This event is free but you must RSVP by May 8th so proper transportation can be arranged.

Rustic River Farms, Roseburg, OR
Farm tour and work party (u-pick cut flower farm)

Join the Douglas County Women's Farmer Network for the morning and learn about cut flower production. Rustic River Farms started in 2016 as a U-pick sunflower and zinnia field along the Umpqua River in Roseburg, Oregon. Now in our second year, we are expanding little by little to offer more varieties of flowers and more ways to get them in to the community through local florists, farm flower subscriptions and seasonal bouquets available for purchase at "My Coffee". www.rusticriverfarms.com

We will start the morning with a tour of Rustic River Farms and then help Anna weed and thin her recent planting of sunflowers. There will be a variety of hand hoes available for you to try out. Sara Runkel the will give a short demonstration on the ergonomics of hand tools you can network with other participants over lunch by the river.

Farm tour (high tunnel production and marketing for the diversified vegetable farm)

Join the Douglas County Women's Farmer Network for a morning farm tour. Big Lick Farm has been in operation for 10 years and they recently moved to a new, larger farm location. Suzie will give a tour of her farm and discuss their diversified marketing channels and how they use high tunnels to extend their season.  Participants will have an opportunity to network over lunch.

"We Can Do It" is the theme for the sixth annual Women in Ag Conference and will be an engaging, interactive day full of inspiration, learning, and networking with other women farmers.  The 2017 Conference is a one-day event held simultaneously in 40 locations throughout Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Washington.
