Tree ID is more than just knowing what you've got planted in the backyard or an entire forest. Is your tree native to the region? Is it suited to the area? Whether a tree is going to survive and thrive for years to come depends on a number of factors, including: species, sun or shade tolerant, soil quality, water, susceptibility to insect & disease, animal issues, seedling availability and stock type.
There are a number of incorrect, common-held beliefs regarding tree identification. We'll discuss the "rights" and "wrongs" of proper tree identification, using an orderly, systematic process in which you can properly identify trees. Then, we'll look at the factors affecting growth and "hazard a guess" as to the long-term chance of success based on a given species.
