Derek is a Professor with Oregon State University in the Department of Biological and Ecological Engineering and has been working for OSU Extension Service since 1994.  He has served as an Extension Watershed Specialist for Western Oregon specializing in low-impact development practices, such as rain gardens, to reduce the affects of urban land use on water resources and fisheries. He has also helped rural landowners and local organizations, such as watershed councils and Soil and Water Conservation Districts, to understand and help implement streamside and upland management techniques to improve water quality.  

Derek earned a Master’s of Science degree in Bioresource Engineering at Oregon State University and a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Forest Management and Wildlife at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech).
