Windows 2000/XP CN Domain Setup

Initial information

  1. Log into the machine as an Administrator.
  2. Click on Start, Run, then type Command into the text field.
  3. Click OK. This should bring up a command prompt.
  4. At the command prompt type “ipconfig /all” and the press Enter.
  5. Under the label “Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:” Write down the “Physical Address” _ _ - _ _ - _ _ - _ _ -_ _ - _ _
  6. Type in “exit” at the blinking prompt and press Enter.
  7. From the Desktop, Right Click on “My Computer”, choose properties, and record the network identification, record the name of the computer from “full computer name”. NOTE: make sure the computer name is what you want and if not change it.
  8. Call the Help Desk (541) 737 - 4177 with the information from step 5 and the Computer name for this computer. You will need to wait about one hour after calling the help desk for the changes to take affect.

Check protocols

From the Desktop Right Click on “My Network Places”, Right Click on “Local Area Connection”.

The only protocols installed for a basic setup should be

  1. Client for MicroSoft networks
  2. File and print sharing
  3. TCP/IP
    You may need other protocols installed but these are the basic ones.

After waiting about one hour

  1. Log into the machine as an administrator.
  2. Click on start, run, and enter the word “command”, Click OK.
  3. In the next window that pops up at the blinking cursor, type in “ipconfig” and hit Enter. Check to see that the “ip address” starts with 140.211.---.--- If it does, than the machine has the correct info. Type exit and Click OK.
  4. Right Click on My Computer. Click on properties.
  5. Select the Network Identification tab. Click on Properties.
  6. In the Member of field, select Domain and enter tss.oregonstate.edu in the text field.
  7. Click OK
  8. A user name and password box will appear. Enter your email user name and password in these fields.
  9. Click OK to close window, and reboot.

After Rebooting

At the login prompt, select the option tab and on the right side of the “log in to” box click on the small down arrow, and select the machine name (it is the one that has “this computer” in parentheses around it then enter the user name and password for the administrator. Click on start, settings, control panel, “users and passwords”, here you will add each of the people who will need to get to any shared resources on this computer.Click on add, type in the users name (this is the name they use to log into email) and set the domain to CN, in the next window choose restricted user, and finish. Repeat this process for each person in you area who needs access to you shared resources.

Next Click on Start, Programs, Administrative Tools, Computer Management. Under the “tree” tab click the “+” next to “Local Users and groups” and over in the Name column, choose groups and Double Click the Administrators group, click add, change the “look in” option to CN (using the drop-down menu). In the bottom window type in “Itmg4” and click ok. You will then be asked to enter your email user name and password. The entry “cn\itmg4” should appear, highlight it, Click apply, and then close the window.

Log out and login back in as a user.

NOTE: User added in step 2 of the (after rebooting section) will not be able to install software due to the security restriction of users. In order for a user to be capable of installing software they must be logged in as an administrator or their security level must be set to administrator.
