Virus & Spam

Virus

ECTU supports the use of Symantec Antivirus for detecting and protecting against infections. Virus definitions are sent out by a server here on campus on a regular rotation to insure that your software always remains current. If you ever notice an ! mark or a circle with a slash through it over the yellow Symantec shield in your lower right hand corner of your computer screen, please contact the HelpDesk immediately.

Symantec Antivirus is cleared for home use in accordance with the contract to insure that you do not bring work home on writable media only to bring viruses back from home to work.

Helpful instructions:

Spam

Community Network has put together an explanation of Spam and what you can do about this growing problem. Follow the link below to find out what you can do.

http://tss.oregonstate.edu/cn/support/docs/spam/?type=normal

The Community Network link describes how to use Spam Assassin, and then by following the links for your Windows and Outlook versions, how to set up Rules in the Rules Wizard of Outlook to filter them messages out.  If you have difficulty with this description of the Rules Wizard, it can also be found on the 4th page of this Outlook manual:

Spyware

Spyware is a name given to various programs that have one purpose in common. They are designed to steal the passwords and privacy information off of your machine. Some merely intend to send you extra SPAM or mail to your home physical address. Some are trojan horses looking for the passwords to take over your computer system or banking accounts. We use two tools to help protect our systems against these programs. They are Spybot and Adaware.

The February 2003 Software Tips has instructions on how to use these programs, download links to get them, and an explanation of what they do. We suggest using a combination of both of these programs.
