April 20~Food Safety for Seniors
Foodborne illness outbreaks are often in the news. Unsafe foods cause an estimated 76 million illnesses and 5,000 deaths each year. Foods such as raw spinach, alfalfa sprouts, raw milk, undercooked ground beef, and even peanut butter have been implicated. Although anyone can get foodborne illness, older adults are more at risk because our immune system weakens as we age. We will focus on what is being done to protect the safety of our food supply and ways to reduce potential food safety risks.
