Discretionary calories come from foods with many extra calories but few vitamins and minerals. These foods contain solid fats or added sugars. Examples are sausage, biscuits, sweetened cereal, salad dressings, butter, candy and soda.

Eating too many discretionary calories is a health concern. Take care not to let discretionary calories crowd out other foods you need.

Remember, discretionary calories provide you with extra calories, but nothing else. When you take in extra calories and you don’t offset them by being more physically active, you will gain weight.
