Shopping and Storage Tips

A variety of foods make up this food group, including bagels, corn bread, oatmeal and grits. Follow these tips for buying and storing these foods:

  • Save money — buy bread on sale and keep extras in the freezer.
  • Instant rice costs a lot more than regular rice.
  • Foods with less packaging cost less (mini-packets of oatmeal cost much more than a large container).
  • Store grains like rice, pasta and cereal in tightly closed containers to keep pests out.

Here is a good rule of thumb: make half your grains whole! Try putting some of the following whole grains on your shopping list:

  • whole-wheat flour
  • bulgur (cracked wheat)
  • oatmeal
  • whole cornmeal
  • brown rice
  • whole grain pasta
  • corn tortillas

That's all for this food group. Can you guess the next food group?
