Watching your portion size is a good way to stay within recommended limits from this food group. Here are some tips for buying and storing protein foods:

  • Best buys include turkey, regular ground beef, and whole chicken.
  • Dried beans and peas, purchased dry or cooked and sold in cans, are also best buys.
  • Hot dogs, bologna, and bacon are expensive sources of protein. They are also high in fat and sodium.
  • Always keep raw and cooked meat in the refrigerator. Be sure to wash your cutting board, knives, counter tops and sink after any raw meat has touched them.
