Educational Workshops

When Dependency Increases Series

When Dependency Increases is a series of seven multi-media workshop designed for families, care providers, and older adults. Each workshop package includes a 16-20 minute color slide/tape production, script, a comprehensive instructor's guide for conducting a 1 to 3 hour workshop, overhead transparency masters, participant handouts, worksheets, and color videotape (of the slide/tape program).
The workshop is sold as a complete package (includes the videotape). The videotapes are not sold separately.

I - Best Wishes Edith and Henry!
Program explores family relationships and decisions in later life. The story of Edith and Henry's family motivates viewers to consider the impact of decisions on everyone and to identify alternatives for resolving issues that are raised. Guidelines are presented which apply to nearly any decision families face when an older relative becomes dependent.

II - 260 Primrose Lane
Program explores living arrangement options and decisions in later life. Through the lives of Ethyl, Claire, Sara and Norman, viewers learn about the impact a change in living arrangements can have on the older person. Discussion focuses on living arrangement options and factors to consider in making housing choices.

III - The Dollmaker
Program focuses on the importance of caregivers taking care of themselves. The caregiver's health is at stake when Alyce provides 24 hour care for Ernie and refuses help and respite. Alyce becomes isolated and loses her health, relationships, and interest in life. Guidelines are suggested for making caregiving decisions and reducing caregiver stress.

IV - Due Upon Receipt
Program addresses the financial concerns in later life. Through the stories of Isabel, Carlos, Fred and Maggie and their families, viewers learn about problems low income elderly face, resources available, health insurance coverage, guardianship and conservatorship, nursing home costs, and the importance of family members talking together about financial concerns. Guidelines are presented for making financial decisions.

V - The Second Story
Program explores loss and grief in later life. Following the death of his wife, William Sanders, 70, tried to "be strong" and didn't talk about his wife's death. Six months later he experiences additional losses. Viewers learn about the grief process, the impact of multiple losses, and ways to support the bereaved.

VI - The Final Course
Program focuses on depression in later life. Mrs. Murphy, 72, took great pride in her roles as wife and mother and her ability to make the finest desserts. Following a mild stroke, she becomes depressed. Viewers learn about signs of depression and how they can help a depressed person.

VII - Winter Comforts
Program focuses on alcohol problems in later life. Following retirement, Phyllis' one glass of wine gradually extends to several glasses to "drive away the loneliness." She becomes forgetful, develops unexplained bruises, calls at odd hours, and exhibits behavior changes. Eventually the family recognizes that Phyllis has an alcohol problem. Viewers learn about alcohol problems in later life and how to intervene.
