• More than 61% of Oregon’s adult population is overweight or obese, putting them at greater risk of health problems including heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, and certain types of cancer. Every year an additional 43,000 Oregon adults become obese.

• Oregon’s children are also affected by obesity, with one in five classified as either overweight or obese. It is well understood that overweight children are more likely to be overweight or obese adults.

• Eating plenty of whole grains, fruits and vegetables, lean meats and low-fat dairy, while reducing intake of salt, sugar and saturated fat, can help reduce the risk of chronic diseases, including diabetes, heart disease, and high blood pressure.

• Research shows that being physically active and eating more whole grains, fruits and vegetables is associated with better weight maintenance.
