Master Gardener Arbor Day Activities Planned at Inspiration Garden in Independence

Learn how to plant a tree, make a soil block and take a tree trek through the Polk County Master Gardener Inspiration Garden from 1 to 3 p.m. on Arbor Day, Sat., April 12th at Mt. Fir Park on the 700 Block of “F” Street in Independence.

Arbor Day History

Arbor Day started in 1872 in Nebraska and is now celebrated at different times of the year in various states and nations corresponding with the growing season in each area.

Inspiration Garden Arbor Day Activities

In Oregon, Arbor Day is celebrated the first full week in April.  April 12th is the day Polk County Master Gardeners, part of the OSU Extension Service, selected to focus on their chapter’s demonstration and Inspiration Garden in Independence.

Afternoon activities include a tree planting demonstration and a trek through the trees to introduce people to close observation of the features of common trees. Participants will also get tips on how to identify trees by common names.  The soil block demonstration will show how soil blocks can become a tool to use in starting plants for a garden.

Inspiration Garden Development

The Inspiration Garden is a multi-year project on up to 4 acres of the 7.3 acre Mountain Fir Park.

Current gardens under development include; a children’s garden, a bee and butterfly garden, a medicinal plant garden, a rock garden, an herb wheel, vegetable beds, fruit trees and berries, an Asian/bamboo garden and new this year, “The Joy of Roses Garden,” and a prairie/wildflower garden.

“It’s also been suggested that the eastern “swale” be planted with interesting or unique trees and shrubs illustrating spring and/or fall colors, flowers and berries and unique bark,” said Bill Leedy, chair of the Polk County Master Gardener Inspiration garden.

Pathways will weave throughout the garden with benches in place for rest and reflection.

The Master Gardener program is part of the Oregon State University Extension Service.  It’s a voluntary educational program designed to meet the community’s gardening needs.

The goal of Master Gardeners is to teach people more about the science and art of growing plants by providing information and technical assistance using research-based and sustainable gardening practices.
