Livestock production provides significant income to the more rural areas of Jefferson County east of Madras. Rangeland management is becoming more important as annual weedy grasses replace bunchgrasses in some areas of the county. Bunchgrasses are not only important as a food source, but to provide soil stability and structure. Cheatgrass and medusahead on the other hand provide poor feed, allow the soil structure to break down and create hotter burning forest and range fires that cause significantly more damage.
