Volunteer Opportunities
A Master Woodland Manager (MWM) is a qualified small family forest landowner (small woodland owners) who receives specialized training from the OSU Extension Service Forestry Program. This instruction helps each MWM become an effective volunteer and community leader.
All MWM participants receive approximately 85 hours of free training in subject areas ranging from management planning, ecology, and forest inventory methods to silviculture, wildlife, and watersheds. In return, Master Woodland Managers provide in-kind service through various volunteer activities.
After completing the training program, a MWM is able to help neighbors with basic forestry planning and decision-making processes, offer guidance, and point them to local sources of assistance. In their volunteer role, MWMs help small woodland owners:
- Recognize opportunities for tree planting, thinning, controlling animal damage, and related forest management practices
- Identify important considerations that will protect your property from fire, insects, and disease
- Locate sources of assistance such as consulting foresters, loggers, tree planters, and other natural resource professionals
- Identify sources of financial help available through cost-share programs, reforestation tax credits, and loans
- Taking leadership roles in local organizations and community government
- Providing education to youth groups
- Speaking to non-forestry audiences regarding the importance of forestry
