Garden Tips

Trained volunteers in the Lane County Master Gardener™ program contribute information on a variety of home gardening topics. Check our site frequently for new articles throughout the growing season.

This month's tips

  • Nylon netting, available at fabric stores in 6-foot wide rolls, makes a great row cover. Often on sale, the netting keeps insects and birds from your garden and can be sewn to fit a frame. It does not give significant cold protection, however.
  • A newly planted tree requires about 15 gallons of water per week during the growing season.
  • To bar squirrels from your fruit trees, put a length of stove pipe around the trunk. You also can use overlapping flashing. Be sure it is higher than the squirrel can jump.
