Carpet Beetles (Anthrenus species)

adult carpet beetle (Anthrenus species) carpet beetle larva (Anthrenus species)
A common carpet beetle adult, about 1/6- to 1/8-inch long. Some carpet beetles are dark in color. Carpet beetle larva 3/16- to 1/4-inch long. Their fuzzy "skins" can be found in drawers, cupboards, and among damaged fabrics.

A number of beetle larvae infest and damage natural products such as hide and leather, fur, wool, grains, and dried plant material.  Some are highly destructive to insect collections.  Adults feed on pollen.

Management:

  • Dispose of infested materials.
  • Clean storage areas thoroughly.
  • Dry-clean, or launder, infested fabrics and rugs.
  • Store only clean fabrics.
  • Moth balls and other chemicals are generally not effective and may be hazardous.
