natural resource programs:

W3 Wildlife, Watersheds, and Whatnot: Class offered on Wednesdays from 3:30-6:30pm for 0.5 Credit. 80% of the class is in the field and is designed to connect youth with natural resource specialists. Participation in the 85+hour class is a requirement for students wishing to attend the Caretakers of the Environment Int’l Conference in Denmark July 2008. Fall-Term classes begin October 3^rd at the Straub Environmental Learning Center (North High by Olinger Pool). Applications will be accepted for the 35 openings until Sept. 27.

YES – Youth Enviro Squad: One event commitments that engage students in service learning projects in the community and are larger team efforts to improve the environment. These are mostly Saturday and school holiday events. Examples are the SOLV Beach Clean-up 9/15, Make A Difference Day activities, other activities organized by watershed councils and other local agencies. Scheduled events are TBD.

YMP – Young Master’s Program: This is a year-long program for credit that focuses on environmental sustainability issues and a service learning project. The program itself is administered through Lund University in Sweden and is designed to connect students with other students from around the globe. The culminating event for this program in the Global Environmental Youth Convention (GEYC) which will be in Beijing, China October 2008. Site and classes times are TBD.

These programs are designed to instill a sense of environmental stewardship in youth and are structured in a manner that builds leadership skills, camaraderie, and teamwork.
