ICYI engages youth in a tiered mentoring program (meeting the Best Practices Standards for Mentoring Programs established by Oregon Mentors and the National Mentoring Center).   Mentors from USFS, PNW, BLM, OSU and other organizations develop positive relationships with young people.  The mentoring relationship introduces students to new opportunities and helps them realize their full potential.  During the school year students engage in an intensive series of afterschool and weekend experiential, hands-on learning activities with real-world applications (a total of 35 content hours).

In the summer youth may participate in a variety of summer camps, service learning projects or internships (a minimum of 15 content hours).  These opportunities include the ICYI Summer Capstone Camp at Oregon State University, Summer Hiking Series, and a backpacking trip.  The ICYI camp serves as a yearend celebration for current ICYI participants.

Throughout the year youth develop skills in science, technology, engineering and math while they explore natural resources.  The utilization of exciting and engaging field trips, internship opportunities and unique experiments excites and engages students.
