Program History
BackgroundIn 1995, the U.S. Forest Service Pacific northwest Region African American Emphasis Program Managers met to discuss the shortage and retention rate of African Americans in natural resource science and management fields. The region had lost 44 percent of its African American students recruited through the 1890 Initiative in Biological Science despite strong recruitment and hiring efforts since 1992. The Inner City Youth Institute (ICYI) was proposed as a solution. Accomplishments
