
The content of this module is based on the Basic Botany chapter
in the Master Gardener Handbook. This online module is being used
for Web-based delivery of instruction in conjunction with the
annual Master Gardener training program.
After completing the Web-based Basic Botany module, Master
Gardener trainees should:
- Have a basic understanding of plant growth and development
- Have a basic understanding of plant anatomy and the functions
of these organs
- Be able to explain the different life cycles of plants
- Have an increased knowledge of roles plants play in our everyday
lives
- Know how to manipulate plants to achieve certain outcomes
(e.g., greater flower and fruit production, better branching
habit)
- Have an understanding of how the major plant processes of
photosynthesis, respiration, and transpiration are carried out
in a plant and how the delicate balance among the three must
be managed by a plant
- Have a sense of how environmental factors of light, temperature,
and water affect plant growth and development
- Have a general understanding of plant hormones and the roles
they play in a plant
- Have a general understanding of how plants grow in a natural
setting versus a human-made environment
