Portland Metro Area Master Gardener- Certificate Program

Metro Master Gardener Program Mission:

Our goal is educate the public about plant-based solutions for social and environmental problems by providing relevant, science-based gardening education and outreach to the citizens of the Portland metro area.

Certificate Program

Starting in 2008, the content of the Master Gardener Training is available to professionals in the nursery and landscape industry as well as busy professionals in other fields without the volunteer component of the traditional MG program.

Master Gardener Certificate Program Content includes the following topics:

  • Botany for gardeners
  • Soils and compost
  • Home vegetable and container gardening
  • Small fruits and home orchards and pruning
  • Ornamental plant and lawn care
  • Integrated Pest Management (IPM)
  • Garden entomology (insect identification) and household pests
  • Plant diseases and plant disease diagnostics
  • Ecological landscape design and water-wise gardening strategies
  • Safe pesticide use and weed management
  • Plant information resources and communication.

2008 Certificate Program Specifics

The MG training is an 11-week course that takes place January through March each year. Nearly 200 people participate the the MG training each year in the Portland metro area.

Classes are held on weekdays from 9:00AM - 4:00PM

Starting the week of January 11 and

Ending the week of March 17.

Participants can attend the classes in any of 3 locations in the Metro area:

  • Tuesdays in Beaverton,
  • Thursdays in Aurora at the North Willamette Research and Extension Center (NWREC)
  • Fridays in Oregon City.

To register for the 2008 Master Gardener Certificate Training:

Print the 2008 Certificate Registration Form and mail it to us along with your program fee. We will send a confirmation notice upon receipt and you will receive a welcome packet in October.

There are a limited number of partial scholarships available. Please ask us.
