Hyslop farm field day
May 13, 2005
CORVALLIS - Oregon State University and USDA Agricultural Research Service scientists will present their findings on cereal grain and seed crop research at the annual Hyslop Farm Field Day on Wednesday, May 25. This event is open to the public and will run from 9 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.
The morning session will focus on the latest cereal grains research, including a presentation by Cascade Grains. OSU scientists will lead a field discussion of grain quality as it relates to ethanol production and provide updates on weed control, stripe rust and cereal leaf beetle.
The afternoon session will feature recent grass and legume seed crop research, including several aspects of ryegrass management, using GIS (geographical information systems) on weeds of grass seed crops, and growing canola for biodiesel in the Willamette Valley. Other topics will include orchardgrass stem rot; controlling bentgrass thrips, cereal leaf beetle and crane flies; integrating planting date and cultivar selection into the rust model; and chloride applications in grass seed crops.
Hyslop Farm is located six miles northeast of Corvallis on Granger Road, just off of Highway 20. Watch for signs. The morning tour begins at 9 a.m. with registration and refreshments. Field tours will begin promptly at 9:30 a.m. and 1 p.m.
The Oregon Seed Council and Valley chapters of the Oregon Wheat Grower League are sponsoring lunch. The OSU Crops Club will prepare lunch, served on-site at noon.
