Symposium focuses on health benefits of berries

CORVALLIS – Increasing scientific evidence suggests that eating berries can make you healthy. Now an upcoming symposium at Oregon State University will explore international scientific research that links dietary intake of berries with the prevention of human disease.

Oregon, as the berry capital of the United States, will be the backdrop for the First International Berry Health Benefits Symposium, to be held Monday and Tuesday, June 13-14, at LaSells Stewart Center on the OSU campus.

Researchers from Spain to New Zealand and from across the U.S. will examine the biochemistry of berries and their relationship to many human health benefits. Among the speakers will be Ron Wrolstad, a distinguished professor at OSU who researches the health benefits in substances that make fruit colorful.

Discussion of research findings from around the world will be of interest to the scientific community, growers, food writers and health professionals.

The symposium is sponsored by OSU’s Department of Food Science and Technology and the Linus Pauling Institute, as well as the Oregon Raspberry and Blackberry Commission and the U.S. Highbush Blueberry Council.
