4-H program wins national award

Oregon 4-H Hall of Fame inducts five

Five adult volunteers from across the state will be inducted into the Oregon 4-H Hall of Fame during their county recognition nights in November. Registration begins for Gardener's Mini College at OSU

Amateur and professional gardeners, as well as trained Master Gardener volunteers are invited to attend the 26th annual Gardener’s Mini College August 5-8 at Oregon State University. Early registration is due June 19 and can be made online. (06/05/2009)

OSU students earn top national award

OSU to host gerontology conference April 2-3

Oregon State University will host its 33rd annual gerontology conference April 2-3. The conference, which is aimed at health and human service professionals but is also open to the public, will feature 40 educational workshops. Keynote speakers will be Brenda Sulick, the director of federal health policy at the Alzheimer's Association, and Jerry Cohen, the state director for AARP Oregon. (03/20/2009)

OSU seminar to discuss water wells in Oregon

Water experts and owners of wells will meet on Dec. 11 in Salem to learn about and discuss growing concerns over Oregon's limited ground water and identify potential solutions. The conference, called Wells and the Well-being of Oregon, is sponsored by Oregon State University's Institute for Water and Watersheds and OSU's Oregon Sea Grant Extension Service. Kevin McCray, the executive director of the National Ground Water Association will give the keynote address on the ground water industry in the United States. (12/05/2008)

Borlaug Fellows from Africa get training, do research at OSU

An agricultural economist and two biochemists from Africa visited Oregon State University for seven weeks to get training and do research that aims to improve the diets, health and financial conditions of people in their countries. The three came to Corvallis through the Norman E. Borlaug International Agricultural Science and Technology Fellows Program. The three participants are: Phyllis Mends, a principal agricultural economist at the Ministry of Food and Agriculture in Ghana; Haoua Sabo, a biochemist at Abdou Moumouni University in Niger: and Olufunke Ola-Davies, a veterinary biochemist at the University of Ibadan in Nigeria. Forum will aim to strengthen rural, urban Oregon ties

Four Oregon universities will sponsor a conference in Salem on Nov. 14 that will aim to strengthen links between the state’s rural and urban areas. Oregon State University, Portland State University, the University of Oregon and Eastern Oregon University will sponsor the event. The conference, called Toward One Oregon: Rural-Urban Interdependence is targeted to an audience of researchers, policymakers, journalists and community leaders. (10/22/2008)

OSU study uses new method to find Oregon meth hot spots

A researcher at Oregon State University has used a new method of combining multiple sources of data to identify counties in Oregon with high numbers of methamphetamine-related problems per capita. The analysis found that on a per-capita basis, these problems were most common in Umatilla County when compared with other counties and the entire state. The study, authored by associate professor Daniel Sudakin, gathered countywide data on 2,570 meth-related incidents documented by the Oregon Poison Control Center, the Oregon Narcotics Enforcement Association, the Oregon State Police’s Medical Examiner Division, and the Oregon Public Health Division’s Hazardous Substances Emergency Events Surveillance System. After Umatilla, the study identified Multnomah, Marion, Linn and Lincoln counties as having significant meth-related problems per capita, but it did not rank these four counties. (09/15/2008)

Governor's award recognizes OSU Extension volunteer

After completing his master-level training with OSU experts, Matt Epstein volunteered his time helping others in Jackson County, as part of the community service network that OSU Extension fosters. For the last two years, Epstein has co-chaired the statewide Extension Community Advisory Network, helping county offices of OSU Extension throughout Oregon organize their own corps of volunteers. This month, Epstein will be honored with the Governor's Volunteer Award for outstanding senior volunteer from Oregon's southwest region. (09/21/2007)

Operation Purple, Oregon 4-H help youth in military families

OSU sponsors new art exhibition to celebrate centennials

The Oregon State University College of Agricultural Sciences is sponsoring an art exhibition called “Layer Cake,” from May 3 through June 27 in the LaSells Stewart Center on campus. The exhibition features works by three Pacific Northwest artists: the late Betty Feves (1919-1985), ceramics, formerly of Pendleton; Charles “Chuck” Guildner of Everett, Washington, gelatin silver photographic portraits; and Nancy Pobanz, mixed media earth pigments and fibers, of Eugene. Seed growers league meeting December 4 - 5 in Portland

The Oregon Seed Growers League will be holding their 2006 annual meeting on December 4 and 5 at the Red Lion Hotel on the River in Jantzen Beach, Portland. Congratulations, 2006 4-H hall of famers!

Oregon 4-H honors ten people with induction into Hall of Fame on June 22, 2006. The Oregon 4-H Hall of Fame was launched in 2004 to celebrate the program’s 100th year anniversary in the state. One hundred people were inducted that first year, one for each year of the program’s existence. In 2005, ten more people were honored for their contributions to the OSU Extension Services 4-H Youth and Development Program. (06/23/2006)

Conference puts students on the stage

On May 18, more than 100 students from rural schools in the Willamette Valley will converge on the OSU campus to present research findings from a yearlong project on bees and pollination. The OSU-K12 Discovering Partners in Nature Conference is part of OSU’s Rural Science Education Program funded by the Toshiba America Foundation and the National Science Foundation. (05/08/2006)

Oregon 4-H hosting camp for uniformed services children

Oregon 4-H in partnership with the National Military Family Association will host a week long summer camp from July 16-22 for children in grades third through eighth whose parents are members of the uniformed services. Clackamas tree school is still highly popular in 15th year

Hundreds of metro area landowners will be learning everything from safe chainsaw use to mushroom identification at the 15th annual Tree School, on Saturday, March 19. The conference, sponsored by the Clackamas County office of the Oregon State University Extension Service will be held at Clackamas Community College. Registration for this year’s school, now topping 500 enrollees, closed on February 28. Tree School has become the largest annual forest education event in Oregon—or the West, said Mike Bondi, forester with the OSU Extension Service. Bondi created OSU’s first Tree School fifteen years ago, as a broader alternative to annual landowner’s association meetings. The “mini-college” approach was an instant success— since 1991 it has grown from the 125 to 575 attendees in 2004. (03/04/2005)

OSU considers special licensing of new wheat variety

A new soft white winter wheat variety developed by Oregon State University has exceptionally soft kernel texture, high break flour yields, large diameter cookies and high sponge cake volume. The superior quality of this variety may be of economic value to millers and bakers if its identity can be preserved throughout the process of production and marketing. (11/23/2004)

PNW Organic Seed Alliance to meet at OSU in January

Oregon State University (OSU) and Washington State University (WSU) are cosponsoring an international conference, titled “Biotechnology: Science and Society at a Crossroad,” on June 1 - 3 at the Westin Hotel in Seattle. The conference, nicknamed NABC 15, is the 15th annual conference of the National Agricultural Biotechnology Council (NABC). Leading scientists and policy experts from around the world will discuss and debate biotechnology and it’s many nuances, including addressing the question:.
