Squats are very similar to chair stands, except squats begin in a standing position and you do not use a chair. Begin with your feet in a wide stance, at least shoulder width apart. Your feet and knees should be pointed in the same direction.
Keep your back straight, tilt the top of your pelvis forward and slowly lower your hips toward the ground. You should feel your weight on your heels and not on the balls of your feet. While your knees are bent, you should be able to look down and see your toes out in front of your knees. If you cannot see your toes, your knees and body weight are too far forward.
At first you may not be able to bend your knees very far. However, the goal is to get your thighs as close to parallel with the floor as you can. Double check that your knees are pointing in the same direction as your feet.
