Northwest love stories: 72 years as a tight knit pair
John and Ruth Hansen met in the snow at Oregon State University in 1937. The couple married on Sept. 21, 1940.
John spent 33 years on OSU's extension staff as a 4-H agent in Polk and Linn County, while Ruth worked as a corporate secretary for a savings and loan. The Hansens, both 94, have two sons, three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
To learn the secrets to their 72-year marriage, check out the article from the  Special to The Oregonian....
"How do you account for the fact that you've been married so long?" She said, "Neither one of us died."
Free Well Water Nitrate Screening Clinic
Saturday, November 10, 2012 9:00 AM - 1:00 PM

For a free nitrate screening, bring cup of untreated well water in a clean, water-tight container. You may either wait for your results (the test takes 5 to 10 minutes if the well water clinic is not busy), or leave your contact information for the results to be delivered after the clinic date.       Local clinics are currently scheduled for:

  • November 10th  at the Albany Farmers  Market, Downtown Albany  Sat. 9-1
  • Bring a sample anytime from 8:00am to 5:00pm to the OSU Extension Service of Benton County office for screening. Located at 4077 SW Research Way in Corvallis.

Involve youth and teens in family budgeting

In this fast-paced world of automatic withdrawals, credit cards, debit cards, quick buys and online purchasing, people do not always realize where their money is going. Spending money is easier than ever. Youth have grown up with this technology and may be even more accustomed to convenient, automatic and sometimes mindless purchasing.

Keeping track of how we spend is an important lesson for anyone, of any age, so as you work out a system for tracking your spending, get the whole family involved and make it a teachable moment. The earlier youth learn important financial lessons like this, the better off they will be in the future.

The basics of tracking your spending (refer to Ways to track spending for more information and resources)

1. Start with a simple system that works for you.

2. Account for all of your income sources and your expenses.

3. Make notes of when you get money and when you spend or save.

Comparison shopping needed for prepaid debit cards

Prepaid debit cards are the latest fee-generating vehicles for financial institutions looking to replace revenue lost when credit card fee regulation started in 2010. Prepaid cards have no fee restrictions and can charge for everything from using an ATM to calling customer service.  The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau predicts that consumers will load $167 billion onto prepaid cards by 2014.

Gardening Corner:  November Gardening Calendar
Here are just a few tips - check the calendar for more ideas.
  • Place a portable cold frame over rows of winter vegetables.
  • Place mulch around berries for winter protection.
  • Cover rhubarb and asparagus beds with composted manure and straw.
  • Rake and compost leaves that are free of diseases and insects. Use mulches to prevent erosion and compaction from rain.

Winter squash - picked when it is fully mature and has a thick, inedible skin. This thick skin provides a protective covering for the squash and allows for a long storage life.  Squash can be stored for three months or longer in a cool, dry place.    When shopping, look for squash that are heavy for their size, free of soft spots and have a dull sheen (a shiny skin is an indicator the squash is not fully mature).

All winter squash bakes well. Cut the squash in two, scoop out the seeds and brush the cut surface with oil. Place the cut side down in a baking dish with 1/4 cup of water. Bake uncovered at 350 degrees F until the flesh is soft.
