New Class: HANDS-ON MUSHROOM CULTIVATION WORKSHOP

Southern Oregon mycologist, Eric Cerecedes, will give a short lecture followed by a hands-on mushroom cultivation workshop during this 4 hour class. Topics will include the classes of mushrooms and their roles in both forest and agricultural landscapes, an introduction to the nutritional values of mushrooms, and an exploration of other potential uses for the farm and garden setting, including waste management and soil remediation. Additionally, attendees will learn to apply simple, low-tech methods of growing gourmet mushrooms in their back yard or on the kitchen counter-top. All participants will take home an Oyster mushroom grow bag ($25 value) which can produce two healthy flushes of fresh mushrooms. Cost of $25 includes all materials. Pre-registration is required. Limit of 50 participants.
New Class: "HUGELKULTUR" AN ANCIENT FORM OF RAISED BED GARDENING

"Hugelkultur," an ancient form of raised bed gardening, is German for "mound planting." Bury rotting wood in the ground, mound it up with soil, compost and mulch, plant perennials (e.g. fruit and nut trees and berry bushes) and ground covers, and you have a huglekulture. It is water preserving, soil building, highly productive over time, self-supporting in a guild of mutually beneficial plants and is a great way to deal with woody debris without burning. Hugels may be the most resilient garden form against climate change. And, their productivity increases while their maintenance decreases over time. The instructor, Greg Marchesse, will provide a basic introduction to the technique, and explanatory materials. The class includes hands-on experience building one or more hugelkultur beds. To support sustainable community gardening efforts, the Jackson County Master Gardener Association will assist stablished or developing Community Gardens with grants up to $3,000. Application information is available at the Extension Office located at 569 Hanley Road, Central Point, or can be downloaded here. All submissions should be received no later than April 1, 2013. Monetary awards will be given to qualifying Community Gardens on April 10, 2013. |
