January 16, 2014

As many of you are aware, budget problems at Jackson County continue to threaten Southern Oregon Research and Extension (SOREC), though a recent supplemental budget restored SOREC funding through June 2014.  There is, however, hope that we can secure stable funding for the future through a service district.  The County Commissioners have initiated a process to put that to a vote of the people in May 2014.  By statute they are required to hold two public hearings.  The first was held on January 8 and featured testimony from numerous Extension and Research supporters. The second hearing will be held January 29 2014 at the County Courthouse Auditorium, 10 South Oakdale in Medford, at 9 a.m.  Speakers will each have three minutes to share their opinion about putting the measure to the voters.  It is important that you attend and make your thoughts known.  Key points the commissioners may wish to know about:

-The need for stable funding

-How Extension has benefitted you AND how this has benefitted the community as a whole
