1st Annual OSU Extension Ranch Roping Workshop

April 21-22, 2018 at the Pendleton Round-Up grounds

This workshop is designed to bring world class horsemanship and ranch roping knowledge to the livestock producers of Oregon State. Martin Black has agreed to start this event off with exceptional knowledge and understanding of the horse and cattle industry. Martin has worked on ranches in Idaho, Nevada, and California while working with the greatest horsemen including Tom Marvel, Charlie and Bill Van Norman, Ray Hunt, Gene Lewis, Melvin Jones, and Tom Dorrance. Martin has taught horsemanship, stockmanship, and ranch roping throughout the world for the last 30+ years and brings instruction to this workshop few people can. This is world class training for our local livestock producers.

Rope branding, Saturday April 21st, 9am – 4pm with a one hour lunch break

  • Happy Canyon arena adjacent to Round-Up arena
  • Focus on safety, horsemanship, stockmanship, roping, and facility design to ensure the greatest chance for success

Open two person competition

  • Round-Up pavilion, April 21st, 5pm until finished

  • Two person team branding (Phase 4)
    • Herd of claves with numbers, call number, rope calf, must hold rodear
    • Score sheet
    • Scoring based on three factors
      • Who a rancher would want to hire to train his horses, brand his claves, and doctor sick cows outside?
      • Which horse would sell for the most money at a ranch horse sale?
      • Which horse would a team roper want to buy?
