2016 Master Gardener Classes
Sign up for 2016 Master Gardener Training Program
Thank you for your interest in the 2016 Union County OSU Master Gardener Training Program. We are still in the process of scheduling classes and fieldtrips for the 2016 program. The classes will be held on Tuesday evenings beginning January 12th and running through May 10th with a final exam. Tuesday classes will begin promptly at 5:30pm and end by 8:45pm. Classes are held in the conference room at the Union County Extension Service office, 10507 N. McAlister Road, Island City. There will be a 15-minute break for refreshments and social time.
Each participant taking the fifty-plus hours of training will be required to return at least forty hours of volunteer time to the community during the remainder of the year to become a certified OSU Master Gardener. Fifteen of these hours must be fulfilled by answering questions from the public at the Extension Office or at other approved sites, such as the La Grande Farmers’ Market. The remaining volunteer commitment can take the form of working on projects with local schools and agencies, giving talks to area garden clubs or schools, or completing an approved project of your own design. Various ideas for completing your hours will be presented throughout the upcoming classes.
The fee for the Union County OSU Master Gardener course is $150.00, with a $50 rebate if you complete the required training and your volunteer hours by October 1st, 2016. The tuition goes to cover the cost of the OSU Master Gardener Handbook that each student receives, informational handouts that are distributed during each class, as well as travel for some of the presenters. Presenters are OSU Extension Specialists, University Professors, and local experts. Each student who completes the course and the volunteer hours also receives an OSU Master Gardener badge, an official Master Gardener Certificate of Completion, and has access to Extension Office horticulture reference materials.
If you are already a Master Gardener and wish to take the classes, the fee is $35.00. To re-certify, Master Gardeners are required to attend at least two classes of their choice and complete fifteen hours of community service. We are also offering individual program sessions, for persons not interested in certifying, at a cost of $10 per session.
To register, please submit a completed application and payment to the Union County Extension Office by January 5th, 2016. Checks should be made payable to “Union County Extension Service”. Please call the Extension Office if you have any questions at 541-963-1010.
