Want to know how much YOUR market animal weighs but you don’t have a scale?

To estimate the weight of pigs with measurements

  • Step 1) Measure the circumference (heart girth) of the animal.
  • Step 2) Measure the length of the body. With the animal standing or restrained in a standing position, measure the distance from the poll (between the ears) over the backbone to the base of the tail.
  • Step 3) Apply the following formula:

Estimated weight in pounds = heart girth x heart girth x body length/400

To estimate the weight of sheep and goats with measurements

  • Step 1) Measure the circumference (heart girth), from a point slightly behind the shoulder blade, then down over the foreribs and under the body, behind the elbow.
  • Step 2) Measure the lenght of body , from the point of the should to the point of the rump (pinbone), in inches.
  • Step 3) Apply the following formula:

Estimated weight in pounds = heart girth x heart girth x body length/300

**make sure wool is compressed or parted to ensure an accurate heart girth measurement

To estimate the weight of beef cattle with measurements

  • Step 1) Measure the circumference (heart girth), from a point slightly behind the shoulder blade, then down over the foreribs and under the body, behind the elbow.
  • Step 2) Measure the lenght of body , from the point of the should to the point of the rump (pinbone), in inches.
  • Step 3) Apply the following formula:

Estimated weight in pounds = heart girth x heart girth x body length/300
