Healthy SNACZ Fair
"Whole Grains" booth
The Elgin Healthy SNACZ Patrol 4-H club developed the whole grains “Try This Not That” booth. The goal of this booth was to teach the club members' peers the benefits of whole grain, the importance of fiber, the difference between refined/ processed grains and whole grains, and the location of whole grain information on a nutrition label. Another goal of the group's work was to compare commonly chosen snacks with healthy alternatives. The focus of the booth chosen by the Elgin Healthy SNACZ Patrol 4-H Club was the importance of whole grains, how to tell the difference between whole grains and processed grains, and how to find healthy products in their local stores.
This booth was facilitated by an OHSU Nursing Student, Nicole Stanford. Nicole was part of a team of nursing students who traveled to North Powder, Elgin, Union, Imbler and Cove to deliver healthy snacking information to the five schools within those communities. Healthy SNACZ Patrol 4-H members hosted and assisted the nursing students at each of the booths when the health fair arrived in Elgin. The 4-H club members' role was to answer peer questions, support the nursing students at each health fair booth, and welcome their own peers to the Healthy SNACZ Fair. The 4-H students enjoyed advocating healthy snacks in the schools and learned valuable information regarding healthy snacks to share with other members of the community.
