Healthy SNACZ Fair
"Drink More Water" booth
The 4-H SNACZ fair was held at North Powder Elementary on April 28th from 1-4 pm. Parents, teachers, and students from 4th through 8th grades were invited to attend the fair and participate in the educational healthy snacks booths. For their SNACZ fair booth, the Badgers for Healthy Snacks club in North Powder created a booth all about water and why students should choose water over other sugary beverages. Megan Reynolds, an OHSU nursing student, assisted the North Powder SNACZ club in the creation of this booth.
At the water booth, students were asked to organize popular drink items from most sugar to least sugar. Plates of sugar cubes provided a representation of the sugar in each drink. When the students were finished, the correct drink order was explained to them. Many students were surprised to find that some of their favorite drink items, like juice cocktails and sweetened teas, contained a great deal of added sugar. The students then received handouts containing tips on how to drink more water and the link to a website that would allow them to calculate the sugar in various drink items. The goal of the Badgers for Healthy Snacks water booth was to encourage students to drink water more often and save sugary drinks for special occasions.
