“How about having a tailgate party at a high school football game?” “But let’s have all of the food be healthy.” That’s what the Union 4-H SNACZ club decided to do to spread the word about eating snacks that are low in fat, sugar and sodium. Read the following summary written by club Ambassador, Maggie Sheehy, to see how their second outreach project went.
Earlier in October, the Union Healthy SNACZ club seized the opportunity to do an outreach project at one of our local high school football games.
We hosted a contest. Each participant entered a recipe card containing a healthy snack. When all entries were in, we had a club meeting to decipher which recipes contained both nutritious value as well as good taste. We eventually narrowed it down to four recipes.
For the football game, we prepared large quantities of each of the four recipes and set up a table of samples for spectators at the game. Those who sampled the foods then voted on which was their favorite.
At halftime of the game, our SNACZ kids announced the winner, who received a large basket full of fruit, vegetables, and other healthy foods. The winning tailgate recipe was a Smoked Turkey Tortilla Roll submitted by Victoria.
The project was an enormous success, and our community loved it. The SNACZ members did an excellent job of using the skills they have acquired through the SNACZ program to differentiate between healthy and unhealthy snack recipes that were entered. They were also dependable and on time for all of the activities associated with putting on the competition. Most importantly, everyone had a really good time. The SNACZ members’ favorite part was definitely getting to sample all of the recipes, but they also had a lot of fun interacting with community members and promoting the SNACZ club.
