Youth in Agriculture

Youth are a priority for the Warm Springs tribal council.  Extension education includes involving youth in hands on agricultural activities that promote life skill development and increases awareness of natural resources.  Some of the ways in which this occurs is:

The Rockin' 4-H Club which involves youth and their families in raising a commercial beef cow-calf operation.  The capital for the animals was obtained through the Farm Service Agency youth loan program.  Youth are exposed to all aspects of ranch production including animal care, fencing, pasture development, and recordkeeping.

Home based 4-H groups that are family run.  One such example is Tyson Green's cattle project.  Tyson is a seventh grader that also obtained a Farm Service Agency youth loan to start his own roping cattle business.  His herd doubled in the first year with a 100% heifer crop, and is still growing.  Tyson is also learning the various aspects of ranch work and livestock care.

The Ag. in the Classroom program with the 4th graders at Warm Springs.  Curriculum from the Oregon Ag. In the Classroom Foundation is utilized to support learning skills in youth while engaging them in a hands on small scale agricultural project.
