4-H Wasco County and State Fair
Important message to Exhibitors:
Due to the spreading concern over the Avian Flu, Dr. Lea Master, the Oregon State Veterinarian has recommended no water fowl shows occur at the county fairs. He states: “We know our wild waterfowl in Oregon are carrying the HPAI H5 viruses, and we know that the viruses are widespread throughout the state. We have had two incidents where wild waterfowl contact with backyard poultry resulted in a serious disease incident. The HPAI viruses do not cause disease in their wild hosts but an infected wild bird can still shed virus. This non-clinical carrier state is very troublesome and can also occur in our domestic waterfowl. In light of the high risk that exists in our state, as well as the unprecedented ongoing HPAI outbreak in our country, my recommendation to the county fairs, 4H’ers, and others is to restrict waterfowl from our shows for this season ”. He goes on to recommend that any birds housed near a pond with wild waterfowl also not come to fair and no duck eggs either as research shows that if an animal has the virus or are carriers, their eggs often carry the virus, too.
In light of Dr. LeaMaster’s recommendations, the Wasco County 4-H program we will not be having a water fowl show. This includes all ducks and geese. If you were planning to bring a duck or goose as a market project, please adjust your thoughts now. For your information, Cornish Cross chickens should be hatched aroung July 1 to be the proper age for fair. Market chickens and turkeys are scheduled to be tagged and weighed-in on Thursday, July 23rd at 5:00 pm.
Please feel free to contact our office with any questions or concerns.
