May 2013: Be HEARD, not part of the HERD

Welcome,

If you are reading this for the first time or you are new to Hillsboro or Washington County, and you would like to know more about your county’s Citizen Participation Organization (CPO), please take a moment to read about what’s going on. Through CPO #9, you can learn more about your community and find out how YOU CAN BE HEARD by your local government!

In order to help you be heard, we put out our first CPO #9 Subscriber Survey, which has over 160 respondents. We’d like you to subscribe to our list if you haven’t already, but the survey is open to all who live or work in our area. Thank you to the respondents, and we invite everyone to participate. CPO #9’s goal is to “Communicate, Educate and Motivate” and your feedback helps us develop our group and hold meetings with “Hot Local Topics” that affect your community!

Through the survey, we have heard the following information or preferences:

  • 1 in 4 survey respondents have attended a CPO 9 or other CPO meeting.
  • For the local governments or agencies you want to learn more about, the City of Hillsboro and Washington County received the most responses, followed by Hillsboro School District, Metro, TriMet and Port of Portland.
  • Your rankings from a set list of issues and concerns were clustered closely, with the highest rating for Land Use/Development, followed by Transportation Improvements, Public Safety, a tie between Economy/Job Growth and Environmental Issues, and Citizen Participation in Local Government.
  • Forty-eight respondents listed their top issues or concerns. Education, public education, schools, or youth-related issues were given by 12 respondents, and Hillsboro Airport-related issues were listed by 7 respondents. Bicycling, housing-related topics, Downtown Hillsboro, and social services were listed by more than one respondent. Community building, neighborhood restoration, historic preservation, transparent government, equitable taxation, and fewer
  • regulations all received a mention.
  • Your top preference for the CPO #9 Bi-Monthly Meeting was Monday evening, followed by Thursday and Tuesday evenings.

We will continue to keep this CPO #9 Subscriber Survey active through the end of May, and we’ll track these results as we get additional responses. We will make sure that we give others a chance to respond and to get as much citizen input as possible. We are using the responses to plan CPO #9’s activities, building the foundation for a successful group for years to come.

Sincerely,

Tom Black, CPO #9 Chairman
