Christmas Trees
Depending on the year and who is counting, Christmas trees ranks as Oregon’s fifth largest agricultural crop by sales.
Oregon is the number one producer in the nation. In the last National Agricultural Statics Survey in 2005, the crop production values were 108 million. Growers shipped 6.9 million trees to consumers across the US and the world. The largest importer, California, received 47% of these trees and 13 % were shipped to Mexico.
The two most popular trees are Douglas-fir and noble fir. Douglas-fir grows more rapidly than noble and growers will have marketable trees in 5-7 years depending on the site, tree size at planting and a host of other variables. Noble fir takes longer to grow (7-10 years) but commands a higher sales price in the market.
In Oregon there are around 63,000 acres growing Christmas trees.
