Special Meeting!
Wednesday, April 15, 7pm

AGENDA

Join us for the second meeting on high-speed Internet connectivity in rural Washington County!

There were more than 100 in attendance at the first meeting on March 18th. The level of concern expressed about access (or the lack of) to good broadband is high and warrants a follow-up meeting to address more specifically some solutions to Internet issues in our rural areas.

At this meeting we are inviting more providers that serve our area, including wireless services, to tell you more about their options that may be available to you now, or in the future if expansion is feasible.

Our March 18th panel of experts represented a number of providers in the area. Because of relatively low population density, topographical barriers, and greater geographical distances, good broadband service is more difficult to obtain in many areas of our predominantly rural CPOs. Broadband service provides higher speed data transmission, allowing more content to be carried through the “pipeline” and access to the full range of services and opportunities available via the Internet.

Our rural community should begin advocating now for better access to broadband Internet services. In addition, our community needs more informational and educational resources about the best options for what works in our rural areas. The “serviceability” of the rural market, as we’re learning, depends on return on investment and business models, as well as keeping pace with technology and the regulatory environment. Our community members with technical expertise are also talking about the need for rural customers to have better knowledge about the equipment that brings the Internet to their property and homes.

Please come to our follow-up meeting Wednesday, April 15th,(tax day so you can easily remember it), 7 pm, at the same locale, the Forest Hills Golf Course, 36260 SW Golf Course Road, Cornelius, 97113. Visit the CPO Program online at http://extension.oregonstate.edu/washington/cpo for a brief summary of the types of Internet service described at the March 18th meeting (DSL, fiber optic, wireless cards and cellular service, cable, satellite, and wireless via tower-to-tower transmission). Other informational resources are being gathered. When this information has been posted, we will email our subscribers.

A Recap from January Meeting

Texting While Driving

A Washington County Sheriff’s Office Deputy and a Program Educator from the Department of Land Use and Transportation presented compelling reasons why we just cannot take this risk.

CPO 15 learned some of the latest scientific findings on the impact that technology has on attention and focus. We are all tempted to answer that phone or return a message while driving. If you want to know more evidence, listen to a rebroadcast of a Diane Rehms Show from December 26, 2014, with an interview by Matt Richtel who wrote A Deadly Wanderingthedianerehnshow.org/audio/#/shows2014-12-26/matt_richtel_a_deadly_wandering_rebroadcast/00.00
