Joining or starting a 4-H club is a great way to have fun, learn new skills and meet new and interesting people.
4-H is a youth outreach program of the Oregon State University Extension Service. It is open to all youth ages 5 to 18 as of September 1st of the 4-H Year. 4-H teaches young people life skills like responsibility, critical thinking, communication and more through educational clubs. It costs $30 per year to join 4-H if enrolled by December 31st or $40 if enrolling from January up to the March 1st deadline. There may also be costs relating to the project books and materials. Clubs are lead by adult volunteers who coordinate regular meetings and activities that meet educational goals within a project area. Youth ages 9 to 18 enroll in specific projects of interest. Youth ages 5-8 join Cloverbud Clubs which explore a variety of subjects and do not concentrate on a single topic.
4-H is a family integrated activity. Parents are expected to assist their children in their respective project(s). For example, youth with animals may need help with the feed and care of the animal as well as covering related costs. It works best when parents can share a common interest with the child, like gardening, robotics, shooting sports etc. Each club leader sets the expectations for parental involvement.
