Discovery Garden

A year-round educational garden and teaching facility. A garden for the community for all ages and abilities. A garden to restore and enhance the beauty and quality of the environment. Featuring:

  • Pruning Demo Garden

To find the Discovery Garden, go West from I-5, exit 125 on Garden Valley Blvd. to Old Garden Valley Road and follow the signs to River Forks Park. The Discovery Garden entrance is just before the park's entrance.

Japanese Garden

The Japanese Garden is harmony with nature through the use of plants, stones and water.  Serenity and peaceful beauty emerge, offering quiet places to meditate and contemplate.

Important aspects:

  • Use existing landscape as element (i.e., visually frame with archway)
  • Water - ponds, streams, waterfalls (can mimic with rock formation)
  • Bridges - slabs of stone, arches
  • Stone lanterns
  • Stones - used as design element, jutting from water or raked sand garden
  • Sand - raked like flowing water or simple straight lines
  • Pathway - curve around special features, directing visitor through the garden
  • Empty spaces - avoid overcrowding, keep it simple

Suggested Plants:

  • Trees - Japanese Maple, gnarled old pines, Flowering Plum
  • Shrubs - Azaleas, Rhododendrons, Hydrangeas, Wisteria, Bamboo
  • Reeds and grasses

Your Local Gardening Experts

Have a Gardening Question?

Local OSU staff and trained OSU Master Gardener volunteers serve as an outlet for all of your gardening questions. You can call or visit our office(s) and we will assist you in identifying your weed, disease, and insect problems and suggest research-based management for these issues.

Do you love gardening, want to advance your skills, and volunteer your time to help others learn? We provide Master Gardeners with tools to become better gardeners:

  • Research-based gardening techniques: Learn the art and science of growing and caring for plants using sustainable gardening practices. Our techniques are based on research by Oregon State University and other land-grant universities.
  • Grow your community: Meet beginner and expert gardeners in your community.
  • Learn by teaching: Provide gardening education in your community.
  • Gain confidence in your skills: We see Master Gardeners become more confident, outgoing, and aware of the need for their gardening knowledge.
