Cosplay Contest Rules

We are excited to host this cosplay contest, and we ask that all contestants adhere to these guidelines. We hope to have a contest that is compliant with all laws, to the satisfaction of the parents and the youth who will be participating.

• Coverage – Regardless of gender identity, Cosplay and costumes must cover the area of your body that would follow the attached visual guide, and cover in all public situations. Cosplay with open and/or exposed backs are permitted. You will not lose points for accuracy within the guideline areas!
• Underwear – Please cover your genitals and chest (including the contours of your bits & chest) and avoid a very awkward conversation with our security team. Boxer-briefs, boyshorts, biker shorts are all examples of good underwear. All underwear needs to be completely opaque and not see through.
• Sharp Edges – No part of your cosplay or costume should be able to cause injury to someone who accidentally runs into you. Make sure all sharp edges and pointy bits have been capped, taped, or are appropriately dulled!
• Oversized Cosplay – If you have an exceptionally large costume or cosplay, you must have at least one handler to assist you in navigating the event. These are typically cosplay or costumes that involve things such as wings, large pieces that extend beyond your arm’s reach, parts that are difficult to retract, or pieces that might impair your vision. Think of yourself as a titanic leash child - it’s for your safety too!
• Body Paint & Glitter – Is glitter pretty? Yes. Is glitter messy? Also, yes. Is glitter a curse? For the National Forest Service, most definitely. Our camp location is in a National Forest and glitter is not allowed at camp.
• Hate Symbols – Any signs or symbols that can be characterized as hate symbols or signs of discrimination may not be displayed. This includes any symbol that is widely accepted as a symbol of oppression, hatred, or violence towards a specific group of people.
• Shoes – The soles of your feet must be protected by either shoes or adhesive foot coverings. The walking surfaces can be a hazard, and there is always a lot of walking at camps, so be sure to take good care of your feet.
• NO Wheels – No wheels! Non-moving wheels used as decorations, or part of a decoration are fine, however.
• Laws & Regulations – All federal, state, city, and local laws/regulations must be adhered to in addition to the rules listed above. If you can’t wear it on the street or do it in public legally, you can’t do it at the camp either.
• Props – All props must be checked-in immediately upon arrival to camp regardless of what they may be (fake guns, foam swords, plastic ninja stars, fans, ropes, etc.). Props will be stored until the show, then re-stored until participants can be picked up to go home. Permission from administration will be necessary to take out props outside of the sanctioned times. Props deemed dangerous will not be allowed at camp. All props should look fake. No assault-style props (AR-15, AK-47, M16, etc.) of any kind are allowed. Props include staves, wands, handheld objects of any kind, or any item that is not clothing, and is not worn directly on the body as part of the cosplay.
• Cosplay vs. Original Work – The nature of Cosplay Competitions is to prompt participants to dress like a character from a show, movie, comic, manga, anime, video game, etc. While we value originality, for this competition youth cannot come as a completely original character (self-created) but may create a variation of the popular character (fairy Mario, cyberpunk Samus, futuristic Monkey D. Luffy). All participants will be asked to share who the character is and where the character is seen.
