Managing mud and manure in livestock areas does not have to be a dirty job. There are several remedies for the problem. This article demonstrates the processes for hardening an entrance to a barn. It was part of an OSU Extension Service educational program. You can view the slide set of the presentation.
Hardened or rocked entrances around the barn can help keep mud from accumulating where livestock frequent. You can also use this type of remediation in and around working facilities, stock tanks, feeders and pasture gates. Figures 1-6 demonstrate the process.
Divert clean water before it enters the area. Use drainage ditches with perforated pipe and rock. Install rain gutters on buildings and collect water in barrels or divert to a ditch to be carried away from the area.
